Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Familia

Today is the first day of what is a month-long celebration, Hispanic Heritage Month.

Hispanic Heritage Month coincides with the Independence Day celebrations of several Latin American nations. A month to celebrate our rich histories, cultures, and recognize the contributions of our ancestors. Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month is a chance for us to reflect on and recognize the significant contributions of Latinos and Hispanics to our American culture.

As I reflect on what is to be Hispanic, I think of the most powerful Hispanic family value of the tight-knit extended family.

I can still recall that very moment I walked into my first CHART conference. Maybe I should have worn the black shirt versus this polka-dotted shirt. Maybe I should eat breakfast, or maybe not, as I am too nervous. Am I the shortest person here? The list of what ran through my mind can go on forever, literally. Nevertheless, I think you know what am getting at.

There I was, walking into a room full of other great trainers. In that moment, as I looked around, I could sense the feeling of familia. The room was filled with a strong and united community. It is about being around those that celebrate your accomplishments, share their ideas, and show appreciation for one another. That is familia; it’s what it is to be a trainer and what it is to celebrate our strong Hispanic traditions. It’s about inviting people in, teaching, and coaching to build up.

As we take the time to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, here is an idea to celebrate in the workplace.

Have a FIESTA

Nothing says familia like a fiesta! This can be in-person or a virtual setting. Have everyone bring their favorite Latin American dish, put on your favorite Latin American artist, and let’s all celebrate!
