Understanding and Measuring Culture: Session Recap from CHART Austin

This breakout session met and exceeded the expectations I had from the name.

Carlo and Joe, Buffalo Wild Wing Field Trainers, walked us through how BWW measures culture and their personal journeys to get more comfortable with data and Excel. They also facilitated an exercise in which each table (groups of about 5) listed all the ways we could measure culture using existing available key performance indicators (KPIs).

The big takeaways from this session came from them sharing their journey with Excel and the activity where we crowd-sourced ideas on culture measurement.

Highlights:

  1. Analytics teams have never been busier. The more reporting you can do yourself, within your training teams, the better off you are.
  2. There so many tools and resources available to teach you Excel. Not to mention your analytics team will jump at an opportunity to teach you the basics and potentially free up their bandwidth for more complicated analysis.
  3. You have more tools than you realize to understand the impact of training and culture. Brainstorming sessions with your team would be valuable.
  4. By using % weights, you can create your own KPIs to measure culture or really anything, based on what you the think the most important drivers are and weighting them accordingly.
  5. Excel functions covered – Pivot Tables, Vlookup, and Table formatting.

This session was another great example of how much value attendee dialog added to the overall conference. I really appreciated the insights from my peers. One KPI I plan to share within our company that came from discussion is tracking participation rates in optional company events as a way to measure culture health.
