Manager of Instructional Design

Job Description


POSITION SUMMARY: The Instructional Design Manager provides strategic vision and leadership for the instructional design team. The Manager and the design team are focused on new learning and development programs and the continuous improvement of existing programs, for all levels of employees, using an array of creative approaches, which drive employee engagement, efficiency, innovation, and develop overall capability in line with our culture. In addition, the Manager will develop training solutions that support organizational initiatives and deployments.



  • Hire, on-board, direct, coach and support a team of instructional designers
  • Prioritize team projects and involvement to ensure critical business deadlines are met


  • Create and implement a learning design strategy that supports company business strategy and continuous growth
  • Work with business leaders across the organization to identify key competencies, skill gaps and learning opportunities by providing strategic guidance regarding learning and development practices
  • Drive learning needs analysis, design, development, assessment and evaluation of learning solutions to ensure alignment with business strategy and to maximize ROI
  • Ensure training, tools, and service provided to business partners, projects and initiatives meets client needs, project expectations, and is value-add for the organization
  • Develop content management and knowledge-sharing strategies


  • Oversee the design of engaging and effective learning for multiple type of learners and mediums (OTJ, micro learning, mobile, ILT)
  • Support ongoing design and development of competency models
  • Lead the design and development of technical, professional and leadership skills programs that are critical to workforce development goals
  • Design career pathing for target positions and develop learning assets to support
  • Design simple and effective tools for SME’s to generated content
  • Leverage training time, people and costs by identifying the most efficient and effective learning methods to support training program goals


  • Provide expertise on new learning approaches, technology and tools through continuous research to ensure Xanterra can marry the best in learning methodology with practical organizational realities
  • Oversee the development of engaging and effective learning for multiple type of learners and mediums (OTJ, micro learning, mobile, ILT)
  • Work closely with training delivery team to ensure successful program execution


  • Define learning metrics and partner with internal data analysts to collect and visualize data
  • Work with instructional designers and learning delivery teams to successfully deploy programs and measure impact
  • Support the operations leadership teams by ensuring products and solutions developed are easy to deliver/ track and are continuously updated as well as effectively utilize the Saba Learning Management System
  • Evaluate training effectiveness and implementation to identify gaps, adjust training as needed
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Job Requirements


  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven learning and development business knowledge and ability to make responsible decisions that balance the needs of our guests, employee, and the company
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to build relationships and work effectively across multiple business units
  • Ability to build and maintain a high performance team of training professionals
  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously; has the ability to plan, meet deadlines, and manage competing priorities
  • Ability to effectively build and manage processes, tools and systems
  • Ability to translate data from feedback to improvements to both content and process


  • 5 years of Instructional Design experience, 3 years of Management experience, and 2 years of Project Management experience
  • Extensive learning program management experience
  • Experience leading a team of instructional designers and content developers
  • Broad experience designing for technical, soft skills, classroom, micro-learning, blended, and virtual learning, that have scaled to a diverse learning audience
  • Demonstrated experience using a variety of technologies and other resources commonly used in online learning environments.
  • Expertise with Microsoft Office products: Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook
  • Willing to undertake Domestic Travel when needed


  • Hospitality, travel, or cruise line experience is a plus
