Monical Pizza President Harry Bond wins CHART's Commitment to People Award
Aug 26, 2003
Boca Raton, FL - CHART awarded the 2003 Commitment to People Award to Harry Bond, CPA, FMP and president of Monical Pizza Corporation. Bond was honored at the Commitment to People Awards Gala on Tuesday, August 5, 2003, the final evening of CHART's 66th semi-annual hospitality training conference, held in Boca Raton, Florida.
"In a market where turnover can be as high as 300 percent, Monical's has a restaurant-wide rate well below 100 percent and an astounding seven percent overall management turnover rate," said TJ Schier, president of CHART and president and founder of Incentivize Solutions. "Harry Bond's leadership and emphasis on people is the reason why people want to stay and excel at Monical's."
In 1997, Bond restructured Monical's to reflect the principles of the Service-Profit Chain (SPC), which he encountered in a 1994 Harvard Business Review article, "Putting the Service-Profit Chain to Work." He eliminated the vice president of operations title and put in its place five new team leader positions. This created more decision sharing throughout the company and a unique incentive plan that rewards employees on business goals that emphasize people.
"Individual and organizational success must grow hand-in-hand," said Bond. "The SPC places major emphasis on the importance of employee satisfaction as the engine driving profitability. At Monical's, our team has worked to create an environment where people are part of a family, motivated to achieve, compensated fairly and appreciated for performance. It is an honor to be recognized by CHART, an organization that is committed to furthering the hospitality industry by developing people."
"Harry has led Monical's through its most productive period of growth and change in our 43-year history," said Carol Roosevelt, FMP, Monical's team leader of the revenue growth team. "He began with our corporate mission, 'The Family Pleaser. People Pleasing People,' which emphasizes our company begins and ends with people. This really became the cornerstone of a dramatic sequence of changes at Monical's that made the company participative, family-oriented and a great place to work. The average longevity of a general manager is over 10 years!"
